PREVIOUS PRODUCTIONS
During June 2023, EAG partnered with TSR for their annual Barbour Playwrights Award. Together, we presented readings of three new plays, with one writer being awarded a prize of $500. This partnership allowed us to continue work on plays that we had previously presented as a part of various salon seasons - "Confessional" in 2019, "Abhinaya: A Dance Play" in 2020, and "Un Hombre: A Golem Story" in 2022. The lead producer of this reading series was artistic director Ria T. DiLullo. Stage Management of this reading series was provided by Callie Considine. |
CONFESSIONAL
written by Emily Claire Schmitt Directed by Ria T. DiLullo When the unsolved shooting of a Catholic high school girl rocks the tight-knit community of Staten Island, New York, Abby, who has begrudgingly moved back after years of living in Manhattan, finds herself inexplicably drawn back to the people and patterns of her youth. Is her creeping sense of guilt merely a byproduct of her Catholic upbringing, or are the persistent memories of sinister encounters with her own brother pointing her toward a darker truth? Confessional is a story of the questions we avoid asking and the secrets we keep from ourselves. |
ABHINAYA: A DANCE PLAY
written by Veda Kumarjiguda Directed by Ria T. DiLullo Avni is preparing for her arangetram, her Indian classical dance debut. Her training grounds her, even as her family falls apart. Money struggles, divorce, secrets, and the failed American dream combine with stories from the Ramayana and Mahābhārata. Abhinaya: A Dance Play explores the role of classical arts in the modern world. |
UN HOMBRE: A GOLEM STORY
written by Stephen Kaplan Directed by Ben Freeman A modern-day golem story about Rebecca Wolfson, a recently widowed single mother, who makes a clay man that comes to life and serves as a Bar Mitzvah and Spanish tutor for her 12-year-old son. As mother and son get wrapped up in the distractions that this seemingly perfect solution to their problems offers, the clay man begins questioning his own existence and purpose, forcing all three to confront the truths they’ve all been avoiding. |

When Abigail, the most popular girl at school and a self-described prophet, declares that Vanessa Rosales, the lone atheist, will be the next Virgin Mary, Vanessa responds by punching Abigail in the face. This lands her in detention with Sister Florence, the last remaining nun on campus, who has been begging God for any sign of His existence. Vanessa may be the miracle Florence is looking for, but not in the way either of them expected. The Inconvenient Miracle: A Mysterious Birth Musical is a wholehearted musical exploration of faith, the unknown, self-identification, consent, choice, and healing friendship in a broken world.

"A sweet and tuneful musical that ponders over significant questions, performed with gusto by an exuberant company." - BroadwayWorld
“Chock-full of satire about Catholicism and cults, The Inconvenient Miracle combines all of the antics, song and dance of a traditional musical comedy with healthy doses of both veneration and skepticism… This is one of those early plays that shows great promise at becoming a hit on Broadway… it is perfect… very nicely developed: the songs are all well-written, with catchy tunes and refined lyrics, and the script is engaging… the actors show a great deal of talent and enthusiasm for their roles… this show will be miraculous.” - Opplaud

Vanessa, the lone atheist at Saint Angela's school for girls, is still attempting to process the death of her beloved grandmother when the strange girl from school who claims to be a mystic declares that Vanessa is going to be the next Virgin Mary. After punching said mystic in the face, an act of self defense obviously, Vanessa ends up in detention with Sister Florence, the last remaining nun on campus. Florence, who is having a crisis of faith related to a carrot patch, is woefully under prepared to take on a grieving teenager. But it may be that miracles are just around the corner. Faith, fantasy, and farce collide in this irreverent comedy about life, death, and what it means to be loved.
