CRAFT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

From the beginning, The Skeleton Rep has championed the development of new work by offering to read pages, provide feedback, and facilitate table reads. In 2021, we formalized this process into the Craft Development Reading.
We select 4-8 scripts for the craft development process from the Salon submissions for that year. These are typically scripts that are not as far along in their progress, but the pages themselves very much point towards an exploration of modern myth.

If selected for craft development and the playwright chooses to accept, the next step is for the playwright and a core member (usually artistic director Ria T. DiLullo) to meet and discuss the work. The core member will provide feedback through discussion, and likely suggest some next steps for the playwright. If the playwright chooses to continue to work on the play and completes a new draft before then end of the calendar year, they are welcome to send the core member the revised script. Depending on the needs of the pages itself and where the playwright is in the process, we may offer an additional notes session or it might be possible to move on to the reading itself, where we will cast a table read with actors, followed by a critical response session led by a different core member (usually Emily Claire Schmitt).
The goal of this process is to usher scripts along towards a more completed draft, so that it might be ready for further development, potentially with the addition of an audience's eye. While we do have some ideas about how best to do this, we're more interested in making space for folks who want to do the hard work of developing their craft and will use this time and feedback to better their writing.
