We are The Skeleton Rep(resents), an NYC-based theatrical collective with a mission to Explore Modern Myth. We are a misfit team of artists who proudly don multiple hats, from writer to actor to director to designer to producer and every other hat it takes to put on a show. Through staged performances, we both bring myths to the modern age, and also explore what is mythical about our own age.
The core of The Skeleton Rep is our development lab, known as the Salon Series. Starting in 2014, six to eight times a year, we gather in the artistic director’s living room to put on a fully staged on-book presentation of new work. This work is often in that funny in-between space between readings and workshops, where it wants to be seen on its feet and with an audience to know where best to go next. After the work is shown, everyone is invited to stay for a party! These gatherings have led to countless collaborations, including many works that started as salon and went on to have full productions.
Through the Salon Series, we have also developed a lot of short pieces that center around our mission to Explore Modern Myth. Inspired by our collective, we created a new kind of short play festival to present these shorter works alongside their contextual brethren. These evenings are different because you see an ensemble of actors performing all the pieces, as well as some writers doubling as actors or directors or designers. Through our short play festival series, we are able to share the range and depth of our explorations on a wider scale.
In addition to our evenings of development and short works, we also produce full-scale original works, often in collaboration with The Tank, a home for emerging artists. Since The Skeleton Rep’s conception in 2015, we have put up seven full-length productions, 25 salons, 2 short play festivals, and countless development readings.
We have a lot more work we’re planning on, as well as so much more to be imagined! We would love for you to play your part in Exploring Modern Myth. Come see a show, submit a script, or donate!
Thanks for reading – we look forward to sharing more work with you!
